I left the Rochelles' porch and headed for Sal, reeling in his leash as I walked. He was over by Chuck's tent staring at a short bald man in a faded navy-blue uniform, of the sort once worn by auto mechanics—not the modern, unique blue of railroad uniforms. Almost as curious as Sal, I watched the man hold a tape measure up the canvas and then make a note of the tent's width before doing the same thing with the height of the rear panel. His breathing was more of a wheeze, and he paused to rest before coming around to the front and letting himself inside the tent.

Maybe the state had finally sent a detective to check out the scene of the crime. Many professionals wore mechanics' uniforms these days, simply because they were easy and inexpensive to obtain, they came in a wide range of sizes, and they were easier to launder than the largely obsolete business suit.

I couldn't quite see why a detective would bother with measuring the victim's home when the murder hadn't happened indoors, but I wasn't a forensics expert. It was probably standard practice to measure everything in the vicinity of the crime, as well as to inspect the victim's home. One thing hadn't changed since the Disasters: Bureaucracy still thrived on paperwork, and bureaucrats thrived by filling in every single box on each and every piece of paper.

I'd originally planned to go to the store to contact Todd Harris before reporting back to Peter, but with the detective there, it made more sense to talk to him first. If there was someone with better credentials than I had to pursue the murder investigation, he could contact Todd Harris and deal with the autopsy tomorrow instead of me. I'd just have to find something other than the murder investigation to keep Peter interested in life.

I pulled back the canvas panel to go inside and introduce myself. The dim interior was lit by a single tiny window. I wasn't prepared with a measuring tape like the detective was, but I estimated that the space was about eight feet wide by twelve feet deep. The ceiling ranged from about six feet high at the sides to about ten feet at the peak in the middle. A twin-sized bed was pushed up against the far wall, and a table was centered in the remaining space. The only other furniture consisted of a metal cupboard and a plastic bookcase holding a dozen well-worn school texts covering a variety of age groups. On the top shelf, neatly folded, were Chuck's spare clothes and his empty string bag. There was no food whatsoever, not even the rice that he'd been carrying back from the store when I met him. Perhaps he'd taken it to Laura's house to cook it, since there didn't seem to be any pans or dinnerware.

The man measuring the interior of the tent apparently hadn't heard me come in. I coughed to get his attention.

The man spun around.
